What better way to relax and have fun after work than playing a sport you love? As a Yellowstone employee you have the opportunity to play softball in the world’s first national park – who else can say that?
It’s never too early to start thinking softball. League softball begins in mid-June and ends in late July or early August. Teams are put together by self designated captains, people with a love of the game and the enthusiasm and organization to fill a roster. Captains are some of our most beloved people in the park! We appreciate everything they do. Our leagues wouldn’t be possible without them.
A captain’s first responsibility is communicating with their location recreation staff. Location staff teach captains about the league organization, rules, and deadlines. If you have the gusto to captain a team find your location recreation staff pronto! They’ll then be able to keep you in the loop as more specific information is released as the seasons approach.
Please come to your location’s league softball meeting on June 7th if you are interested in playing or forming a team. The Canyon, Old Faithful, Lake and Grant meetings are at 7:00 pm and the Mammoth meeting is at 7:30 pm.
You can also check Activity Calendars for League Sports Meetings dates and times, a must for interested players.
Aside from league softball, we have pickup basketball on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 pm and pickup volleyball Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm at most locations. This is the perfect time to put together a team for the 3 on 3 volleyball and basketball tournaments!

We have 3 on 3 location basketball tournaments at MHS, OF, GV, LL and CL on Tuesday, June 20 at 7:00 pm. 1st and 2nd place teams continue on to the Parkwide Tournament on Tuesday, June 27 in Mammoth Hot Springs.

The Mammoth gym hadn’t been so loud in years. At times the referee whistles couldn’t be heard over the cries of cheering fans. After the initial seven teams were whittled down to two, Lake’s Norovirus and Mammoth’s Raging Elks met in the championship, a rematch of the 3 on 3 championship played earlier this summer that Lake won by a single point.
The Lake versus Mammoth rematch had been anticipated since the 4 on 4 tourney was announced. Using the sting of defeat as motivation the Raging Elks played with a determination and fierceness that Norovirus never matched. In two eight minute halves the Raging Elks distributed the ball and played as a team. Captain Wesley Powell led by example, hustling after every rebound and knocking down nearly every shot he took. When the final buzzer sounded the Mammoth team celebrated a 24-6 victory with their fans.
All major locations in Yellowstone have basketball courts, which are located inside, outside, or both. For more information on basketball court facilities on a specific location, use the Indoor Facilities & Outdoor Facilities links on this site.
League Basketball is operated every summer. League play begins in late June and continues every Tuesday evening through July. Playoffs begin late July. All summer arriving employees who are interested in league basketball should visit their location Employee Recreation Office as soon as possible to sign up on a roster. Team rosters for all league sports are due mid June.
The 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament is a basketball tournament event that is separate from league play. This tournament begins with location playoffs in mid June. Ask your location Employee Recreation Staff for more details on times and team bracketing. Location winners will advance to the Parkwide Tournament, which will be held in the Mammoth Employee Recreation Hall the following week. Location winners will be given specific information on the play times for this tournament.
