Mountain lion, cougar, puma, panther, catamount – this animal has more names than any other mammal in the Western Hemisphere, yet it is seldom-seen and shrouded in mystery. Learn where cougars live in Yellowstone, explore their biology and ecology, and look into their secretive lives through the lenses of hidden cameras.
Carolyn Harwood is a Resident Instructor with the Yellowstone Association Institute. She studied Outdoor Recreation Leadership and Management at Northern Michigan University and is a Certified Interpretive Trainer through the National Association for Interpretation. For several years, she has studied, tracked, and filmed mountain lions in her free time.

Who is singing that sweet song? What kind of hawk is that? What is that brilliantly colored duck? If you are curious about the array of birds inhabiting Yellowstone, this program will answer your questions and provide an overview of Yellowstone’s amazing feathered wildlife.
Katy Duffy, Yellowstone’s former interpretive planner and supervisor, studied birds for more than 25 years in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.
Katy is a licensed bird bander and has banded birds in Montana, Wyoming, New Jersey and Israel.

Have you ever wanted to experience the true beauty of Yellowstone and camp in the backcountry? At this interactive seminar we will teach you all the basic skills needed for your backcountry trip! You’ll learn how to plan a trip, what gear you should bring, how to pack your gear, and how to be safe in grizzly country. We will also have a used backpacking gear sale while supplies last immediately following the seminar.

Recreation Offices will be opening soon!
Our location recreation halls and offices will be opening soon. The location recreation halls are open from 5 am – 12 pm daily and the recreation office hours are posted on the activity calendars that you can find hanging around your location. Please stop by once our offices are open and check out all we have to offer – van trips, athletic events, big screen movie nights, staff items for sale…the list goes on. Below are the dates for office openings. Aside from the Mammoth Rec Hall (which is open now), all of the rec halls will open the same day as the office at 5 am that morning.

It’s the off-season here in Yellowstone National Park but the Mammoth Recreation Hall is still open for your exercising needs! Our hours are 5 am – 12 am every day. Free weights, ellipticals, treadmills, a stationary bike and kettlebells are all available for use. Pickup Volleyball (every Thursday at 7:00 pm) will also continue dependent on participation.
Fitness classes will continue to be offered through the shoulder season every MONDAY and WEDNESDAY.
– Jessi Gerdes will be teaching PiYo from 12 pm – 1 pm on Mondays.
– Robin Park will be teaching Yogalates from 12 pm – 1 pm on Wednesdays.
All employees are welcome so please come! The classes are in the Mammoth Recreation Hall and are $5 each. The rec hall is CLOSED to everyone not participating during these classes.

We also have staff items for sale as well as bear spray for $35 (THE BEARS ARE OUT AND ROAMING AROUND!!) in the Parkwide Recreation Office. The Parkwide Recreation Office is generally open Monday – Thursday from 8 am – 5 pm. However, our hours are subject to change this time of year.

We all know what it’s like to work behind the front lines of Yellowstone but does the public know? They do if they read these books! Come and find out what former employees of Xanterra, Yellowstone Association, and the Park Service have to say about living and working in Yellowstone.
Jessi Gerdes has been one of the research librarians at Yellowstone for almost 11 years. She’s answered questions on everything from laws in the park to ghosts at the Inn. While she may not immediately be able to answer your question, she can help you find the book that will.
